History:
Lotan is the younger brother of Oahni and adopted brother of Iraelia. As his mother, Minaki and Iraelia’s mother Sirene were best friends from Broken Mountain, Lotan grew up listening to all sorts of misadventures his mother and Sirene would get into. When Iraelia was on the way, the two boys, who were in awe of the tales their mother told of youthful adventures, were only too eager to start their own adventures with the coming pip. The three got along famously from the moment they met and became nearly inseperable companions as they grew up. When all three youths were orphaned after a particularly devastating lander attack, their bond became even stronger than it had been; Oahni as leader, father figure to Lotan and heroto Iraelia; Iraelia as their inspiration for adventure, and Lotan as the ever present moral compass and caution.
Eventually, as these things so often do, Iraelia and Oahni’s relationship evolved into that of lovemates; Lotan, who had never really entertained the idea of a sexual relationship with his adopted sister didn’t get jealous of their newfound bond. He commented after the duo finally admitted the change in their relationship that it had ‘taken them long enough’ to realize what was going on and showed genuine joy that the angst was over and they could all get back to their normal lives! Despite having shared in a few casual flings with willing partners, Lotan has remained relatively separate from such encounters and hasn’t actively sought a mate of his own yet.
Lotan’s place in the pod has often seemed tenuous as he tends to be friendly and amiable but doesn’t actively seek companionship outside of his siblings. When he takes a lovemate, it’s usually for a short stint until he ‘gets it out’ of his system, and then focuses his attention back on whatever task has gripped him. He applies himself with dogged single-mindedness when he is in the grip of a project and can seem rather calloused and uncaring because of the neglect he might show others during one of his fits; those who know him, have simply grown used to his somewhat gruff nature when someone interrupts his train of thought. Without the driving force of such projects, Lotan is the type to sit back and observe the day to day existence of others, taking note of their actions, making predictions of the outcomes – and often being right on the nose with said predictions.
At Old Home, Lotan and Oahni used the training from their parents to help supply the pod with fish, bone and sunken Lander booty, the former, Lotan focused on the most, becoming very attuned to the migration patterns of the varying schools of fish in the area and the best traps to lay to catch specific aquatic prey. Of the treasure hunting, Lotan realized he rather liked to tinker with the lander gadgets while waiting for a nibble on the line, or his nets to fill while fishing. This ‘tinkering’ gave way to a few marginally successful inventions though Lotan bemoans his inability to master the shiny-sharp rock that Landers use so frequently in their crafting,
While not a consummate warrior or show-off like his elder brother, Lotan knows how to fight and can be fierce when protecting those he cares for. He can be selfless, like Oahni as well, but prefers the idea of a hero who lives to fight another day over the one who goes down in a blaze of glory. Lotan is the type to plan ahead for in eventualities and have a backup plan or three in case that plan fails.
Update 1:
When the Landers attacked Old home, Lotan was there by his brother’s side, fighting to hold them back, but when the brothers saw Iraelia coming toward them instead of fleeing like the others, Lotan knew what Oahni would tell him to do. He didn’t like to leave his brother, but he knew that Oahni w/ouldn’t be able to fight as well if he were distracted trying to protect his lovemate. Leaving his brother to fight with the other brave few who stayed behind, Lotan bodily picked up his adopted sister and spirited her away with the rest of the fleeing pod. The anger and resentment she felt for him – and the anger and self-loathing he felt for himself for not thinking ahead and planning for such a massive attack made them exchange heated and hurtful words.
It takes several moons after they’ve settled in New Cove before the duo reconcile their differences and make nice again. Their relationship still isn’t quite where it once was, but it’s improving and they can now chat and hang around with one another with a semblance of their old sibling bond intact. Lotan has thrown himself into his work, making nets, remaking nets, trying new knots and trying to find ways of using the lander crafted items to help bolster the pod’s meager beach defenses as well as scout around the underwater passages for a more secure fallback shelter for the pod.
The Spawning now officially over, Lotan has found a suitably lovely and impeccable distraction in the beautiful rockshaper named Shell during the subsequent evenings afterward. To his surprise, the crafter has found himself seeking companionship and connections within the Pod on a regular basis. Now, with the apparent Resurrection of Oahni, it look as if New Cove is turning out to be a promising new chapter in his life and Lotan plans to coax the most out of the new land and his newfound ties.
Update 7/9/2016:
Lotan and Shell have settled into the happy life of being mates. Though their plans for the future ad a bit different, Shell seems as committed to the relationship as he is though Lotan is all about planning their future out and preparing before making any hasty decisions.
Upon meeting the Northern wavedancers, Brea, Fereng and Murre, Lotan's orderly existence has been turned upside down. Add to this that his best friends, Lionspine and Crest from Broken Mountain have joined the pod, plus his brother has returned whole and sane once more and Lotan's life has become a myriad of events and interactions he can't master. Also Iraelia is pregnant and he wants to help his sister prepare for her pip.
The existence of the Maraeva and the destruction of the huts has thrown order to the wind. Chaos has been a constant companion in Lotan's life leaving him reeling and grasping for a sense of Order that he can control. Though he was initially eager for the expedition to the wavedancers, events that occurred there with Brea made him decide to return home before the rest of the wavedancer expedition. Unfortunately he ran into Brea who also had the same plan. They returned to the pod as grudging companions and promptly split ways afterward. Both had been plagued by strange dreams that were gaining intensity.
Lotan sough his mentor, Uwahi out for assistance against this unwanted dreaming who suggested a deeper form of meditation. It works for a time, but Lotan soon looses the ability to sleep at night and opts instead to meditate while the rest of the pod slumbers. Mentally exhausted, he returns to Uwahi for further aid - she suggests an experiment, which he readily accepts. Unbeknownst to him, Brea also was having similar issues and was seeking a means to control her dreamwalking magic. The two end up touching again in their 'dreaming' states and the source of their irritability is revealed.
Recognition! The two unwillingly exchange soulnames and promptly snap back awake, revolted by what has transpired. Lotan resolves to resist this unwanted 'gift' and Uwahi promises to help him to the best of her ability. The tinkerer goes to find his mate and tell her what has happened, hoping her presence will help him steel himself against the struggle to come.
Often seen wearing:
Pants: Lotan wears a pair of dark navy pants that hang low on the hip with cutouts at the calf for his leg fins.
Arms: He also wears protective sleeves over his arm, also with cutouts for fingers, thumb and arm fins.
Chest: Across the chest, Lotan has a halter that straps across his back and over both shoulders. There are pouches in the straps in which Lotan keeps various small implements. There is a space on the back to hang his bident. He is often seen with a net tucked around his back and through the straps as well. This piece of clothing is purely functional and there are almost no embellishments in his gear save for one piece.
Necklace: Lotan wears a necklace made of select bones from Ol’Razormouth. A curved spine bone, and three of the beast’s teeth adorn this necklace along with a few colorful beads that Iraelia insisted he adorn it with.
Weapon: Dual-head bident; The bident is made from bone taken from Ol'Razormouth though some of it has been reshaped and repaired using other large predator bones since. There is a latch and pin at the center point of the shaft; when the two halves are twisted in opposite directions, it comes apart so that Lotan can duel wield his weapon - providing defense and offense at once. He designed this so that he can also use it in close quarters or connect it back to it's full length for keeping dangerous predators or opponents at bay by extending his reach.
Appearance
Hair: A light, almost pale blue that darkens as it gets closer to the center line of the head, and darker still where it gathers at his neck. His hair is relatively long, falling down his neck to gather at its base. His bangs would fall over his eyes but are swept back over the top of his head instead because of the facial fins that he’s had shaped for this very purpose when swimming.
Eyes: A warm honey gold color, they always seem slightly veiled but generally full of good humor and amiability
Height: 5'4; a smidge shorter than max height
Build: Lotan is one of the tallest males in the pod but unlike the other tall males, he is built lanky. His features are a longer, slightly narrower version of his elder brother’s. Lotan’s neck is slimmer and longer than Oahni’s as well. He shares a similar shoulder width as the stockier male, but his chest tapers to a slimmer, longer torso and narrow hips. His legs and arms are also somewhat longer and though well-toned, his build is more like a swimmer’s build than a fighter’s. Lotan moves with serpentine grace, his steps quick and with purpose, but when he is still, he is utterly still like a statue.
Fins: Lotan has fins on the back of his arms, on his calves and an intricate fin that frames his strong chin and chiseled cheekbones.
Skintone: His skin is generally tan, browned from so much time on the water. However he has a very distinct pattern running down his body, a form of iridescent scales that are serpentine in appearance with the tropical colors of iridescent fish. The scales themselves appear as if they are just under the top layer of his skin. These embellishments can be seen on the back of his arms, on the triceps, and down the back of his shoulder and sides, and then down the side of his thighs and back of his calves. The pattern is not broad at most points, save for along around the areas of his fins, especially on his forehead. The pattern trails down his spine to his lower back. They gleam a blueish-silver and gives him a very aquatic look. The pattern was shaped by Sunset before the last lander attack.
