Hawk has always had a taste for adventure, and he didn't hesitate to follow Wolfdancer towards new challenges when the tribe was split. Hawk's mother Sooth-song is also a tanner by profession, so Hawk felt that his skills would be more needed with Wolfdancer's new pack - not to mention his skills at hunting. He didn't mind the new chief's ideology either, because following The Way never did include humans in Hawk's mind. Hawk also had a problematic relationship with his father, who has a deep distrust of magic that he has been trying to pass on to Hawk. They rarely saw eye to eye, and Hawk was content to get some distance between himself and his sire.
Hawk is a pleasure to be around - helpful, considerate and good at adapting to others' feelings. That's why he has always had plenty of friends, which has made him even more sociable. One of his closest friends, Shadow, was left behind in Ember's tribe when Wolfdancer's band left. However Shadow followed them later, and Hawk and her became lovemates. This stirred some trouble in the new tribe, and Hawk ended up losing one of his formerly closest friends, Dreamcat. They have slowly been repairing their friendship after the dust had settled.
Hawk and Shadow fought side by side in the troll wars and Shadow looked after him with their friend Tenderleaf after Hawk was wounded to the shoulder by a crossbow bolt. The three of them became inseparable friends. Hawk has also found another great friend in Foxtrail, even though his affection towards the rogue can easily be confused with hate.
After several turns of seasons of happily sharing his life with Shadow, Hawk found out that they weren't really meant to be after all. Even though they had even exchanged soulnames and the both of them had thought they'd be together forever, Hawk and Shadow parted ways. Shadow left to Ember's tribe with one of Hawk's best friends, Thorndust. Hawk remained where he was, starting anew. His willingness to live in The Now is needed now more than ever, as he has lost so many close friends during the past seasons.
