ANNOUNCEMENT: New NPC+ System

Post by The High Ones on Dec 10, 2017 4:50:45 GMT
As we mentioned in our last announcement (here), we are making a few changes to the forum. Taking into account the current level of activity from our players, we have decided to add a new way for people to participate in the game, which should take some of the pressure off those with several characters and limited resources: this new character type is called the NPC+. A full description, how-to guide, and rules of use can be found below.
NPC Type Descriptions:
NPC+:
These characters can become foreground characters at the discretion of their Creator/Handler; this person has the sole right to enact major plot changes for the character and are responsible for maintaining their presence as needed (the sole exception to this rule are the Preservers, who may be used by any player). Moderators are exempt from this rule, and may use any NPC+ to further a plot where needed; the Creator/Handler of the NPC+ will be notified in advance and consulted regarding the Moderatorβs plans for use of the NPC+. When not in play, this character is an NPC that can be referred to in passing. Please ask before using an NPC+ in anything more than a passing reference or minor conversation (a few sentences or less). If you would like a thread with an NPC+ as a foreground character, please contact their Creator/Handler. In the event that the NPC+ Creator/Handler is non-responsive, permissions are relegated to the Moderators, and interested players should contact the High Ones account.
NPC:
These characters may be used in any situation as background characters, moveable by anyone. NPCs that belong to the Beloved Dead may only be used in flashbacks (please refer to the Timeline).
When you use an NPC+ or NPC in a thread, please post a reply on that NPC+/NPC bio with the name of that thread and a link (a summary of their actions in the thread is appreciated, but optional). This helps us keep track of what that NPC+/NPC has been up to, and helps flesh out the character. This can be extremely helpful for future players who want to adopt an NPC+/NPC.
How to Use the NPC+ Plugin:
The NPC+ plugin creates a 'mask' over the player character account you are currently posting under. This plugin changes the appearance of the mini-profile in your post, and nothing more; the post count goes towards the player character account you are currently posting under, and there is no way to track posts by that NPC+. To make it easier to track posts by an NPC+, it is suggested you only use one player character account to post for an NPC+ (ie. only posting for Iraelia on Lotan's account).
To use an NPC+ simply click on the sending star icon on the top right of an existing post or next to the subject line when creating a new post. Select the NPC+ you want in the dropdown menu. It is now applied to that post.
Another option is NPC+ auto-selection via the sending star icon in the PBN bar on the bottom right of the forum. Clicking this icon will bring up a window containing a list of all of your available NPCs+. Selecting an NPC+ from this window will display its micro-profile in the corner of your screen indicating that you're using it. While the micro-profile is active all posts you create on the forum will automatically use the NPC+ you selected, saving you time in the long run having to select the NPC+ you want to use on each post. You can click and drag the micro-profile to anywhere in your browser window. When you're done using the NPC+ you can click on its avatar to stop using it.
Every active character account has been given access to a βTest NPC+β, to give you an opportunity to test out the NPC+ system.
Please note:
The NPC+ plugin is only active on RP boards (ie. the plugin will not show up in Plot or Fun and Games boards, etc.). Any abuse of the NPC+ system will result in you being removed from access to the NPC+ plugin.
Unfortunately, the NPC+ plugin does not work on mobile devices, unless you use 'desktop' view while on your mobile device. On a mobile device, all posts will show the player character account that posted them, whether they are 'masked' on not. You also cannot 'mask' posts from a mobile device, though you can retroactively 'mask' them when you log on from a desktop computer.
What You Need to Do:
Players have until January 20th, 2018 to categorize their current characters according to the new designations: PC, NPC+, or NPC.
Character designations MUST be posted below in this thread, or sent to the High Ones account by January 20th. Characters that have not been designated may be categorized by the mods in the absence of a player decision.
Quotas and activity requirements will be postponed, effective February 1st, 2018. Please review them here: Posting Guidelines
